GULF ANALYTICA » engaged in a fruitful discussion in Bangkok on July 21, 2022, with Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana, Director of the National Innovation Agency (NIA) in Thailand. The NIA, an entity appointed by the Thai government, holds a pivotal role in nurturing innovation and bolstering startups across diverse sectors, contributing to the growth of the Thai economy.
The NIA, as the principal innovation agent in Thailand's economy, is entrusted with fostering startups in various sectors to propel the development of the new Thai economy. This discussion delved into the potential collaborations between Thai and GCC entrepreneurs, with a particular focus on the NIA's accomplishments in the medical, fintech, and health tech sectors.
During our conversation, we explored several of NIA's verticals and emphasized their successes in the medical, fintech, and health tech sectors.
In the latter part of our discussion, we turned our attention to the agricultural sector and the possibilities for collaboration in agritech startups. This is especially pertinent given the GCC's emphasis on food security and the numerous agricultural opportunities in Thailand.
Thailand, located in a tropical region, boasts abundant fertile soil, freshwater resources, and biological diversity. Agriculture has always been a cornerstone of the Thai economy, with the country being a major exporter of products like rice, cassava, meat, and poultry.
Currently, agritech in Thailand encompasses agricultural biotechnology, farm robotics/mechanization, farm management software, novel farming systems (e.g., vertical farming), and post-harvesting logistics. Efforts are also underway to establish agricultural digital marketplaces for farmers and develop e-groceries to streamline distribution.
Recognizing the importance of international collaboration, the NIA is keen on connecting with global partners. They have success stories where Thai startups, upon entering the development phase, have expanded internationally by exporting their technology and establishing overseas branches.
In conclusion, Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana expressed the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation with GCC-based companies, including startups, operating in the agritech sector. There are significant opportunities awaiting exploration and development on both sides.
